Cool What does a barrage do?

So I've got artillery firing off barrage over a river on enemy troops. I can't see that it's doing anything. There is nothing in the staff reports or combat maker flags on the map. Is there a way to tell if barrage is effective? I guess I'm not even sure it works like it's supposed to. Thanks for any info you might have.

Hi akxman,

Barrage is a support order (just like reinforce). If there is combat for your arty to support within their ZoB (zone of barrage) then they will join in. If there is no combat then they have no target (our hexes are a mile across, so if they are just randomly shooting in every direction then you would probably take friendly fire more than hit your opponent).

Hope this helps,

Jeff

One more barrage question. If the combat is taking place in an adjacent hex across a river from the artillery location, is the barrage effective or does the river prevent it like it would other types of combat? Thanks very much for the help (my infantry up in Harrisburg thanks you as well

barrage works across rivers, even imapassable rivers, as long as there's a supporting adjacent or colocated friendly unit defending/attacking or probing the enemy adjacent to the art...
